audio tools at hobnox.com

hobnox audiotools

this is truly amazing in all sense of the word. graphically, development-wise, interface, you name it. hobnox.com is - on the lowest level - the latest incarnation in a long line of software emulating the legendary synthesizer that started it all: the roland tr-808. the 808 has not ONLY been used by thousands of bands and musicians but it helped launch and define the sound of many of them. among most notable - in no genre order - were: aphex twins, beastie boys, bomb the bass, dr. dre, klf, kmfdm, nwa, orbital, public enemy, jean michel jarre and of course, 808 state.

the beauty of hobnox is that it’s not just an emulator the tr-808. included are many other audio tools and they’re all graphically skinned to look like the originals. you get the roland tb-303 (another great bass line synth), the kobolt 16 channel mixer, a whole host of effect pedals and much more. one of my favorites is the tone generator. you can play that alone for hours. it was developed by andre michelle; a genius of a developer. check out his lab for hours of fun.

like the tone generator, the hobnox audiotools are built in flash and entirely web-based. once it loads in your browser you can still play offline. online, you can record, save and share your music via the social networking tools that hobnox has built around its virtual recording space. and a recording space it is, you actually have to connect your ins/outs to get the sound you want.

since props must be given to the trailblazers: in the 1990′a another company, propellerheads, came out with a virtual 808 in their software ‘rebirth’. they did a really good job and had bundled a bunch of other virtual audio tools as well as the 303. they’re still around and making audio software. unlike hobnox though, it was a local app and not free.

so, go waste time and send us you tracks.

The 50 states in photos

22nd April 2009 by Heather

This is such a cool project that has the goal of representing all 50 states through photography… the website for The 50 States Project says it best:

The 50 States Project has brought together 50 photographers from across the USA.

Each photographer lives in one of the 50 States and during the year long project each photographer will represent the State where they live. Every two months each photographer will be sent an assignment by e-mail, they then have two months to produce one image in response. The images must represent both their style and the State in which they live.

The first assignment, (”People”), was sent on 2nd January 2009. The second, (”Habitat”), was sent on 1st March 2009. The remaining 4 assignments will be announced on 1st May, 1st July, 1st September and 1st November 2009 respectively.

By the end of the project there will be 300 images which hopefully represent the talent of the photographers involved and have something to say about the USA today.

Check out the photos from the first assignment (”People”), here.
